Ozone water filtration - an alternative to reverse osmosis
Ozone water purification FAQ

What is Ozone and how can it be used for water purification?

O - is the chemical formula for oxygen.

O2 - is the chemical formula for an oxygen molecule. This is one of the major components in normal air (about 20% of it, the rest is mainly nitrogen).

O3 - is Ozone, a very strong oxidant.

Ozone is a very light blue gas with a strong smell.

Ozone is very instable.

Ozone has the chemical composition O3, i.e. oxygen in gas form (which is normally O2) but with an extra atom of oxygen loosely bound. Ozone is an extremely strong oxidant, it will very quickly oxidize anything organic, iron and other substances when injected into drinking water. Ozone is also a very powerful disinfectant which will kill of bacteria and even virus which makes it perfect as a water purifier.

So what does it mean that Ozone is instable?

Ozone will fall apart into normal oxygen after about half an hour. This means that the ozone we want to inject into drinking water for purification must be created "on the fly", it cannot be stored in gas bottles.

The normal way to inject ozone into drinking water is to use small ozone-saturated bubbles. Once injected and after it has oxidated the unwanted substances, the only thing left in your purified drinking water is oxygen.

How safe is Ozone for purifying water?

Ozone has been used for over a hundred years in European water companies as a disinfectant and purifier used for drinking water. When Ozone gets in contact with bacteria, viruses or unwanted odours, the loose "extra atom" of oxygen will destroy the unwanted substances completely via oxidation and the extra oxygen atom is totally destroyed during this process which leaves nothing but oxygen left in your pure drinking water. Oxygen as a water purifier is an extremely safe method.

How efficient is Ozone for water purification?

The amount of Ozone added to drinking water is in the region of a few grammes per 1000 litres. It is over 3000 times faster than chlorine when it comes to killing bacteria!

How is Ozone created?

Normally through an electrical discharge. Lightning can create ozone. Intense UV radiation will also create ozone.
